The Demon Catcher Legend

The most famous legend of Zhong Kui originates from a dream of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang. According to the "Tang Yi Shi" (Tang Anecdotal History), during the emperor's serious illness, he dreamed of a little ghost stealing treasures from the palace. When he was at his wit's end, a fierce-looking but mighty man appeared, calling himself Zhong Kui, who captured the little ghost in one move and devoured it.

After waking from the dream, Emperor Xuanzong's illness greatly improved, so he ordered the painter Wu Daozi to paint Zhong Kui's image based on what he saw in the dream and appointed Zhong Kui as the Great God of Demon Exorcism. Since then, Zhong Kui's image has deeply entered people's hearts and become an important symbol of warding off evil and avoiding harm in Chinese culture.
